The new year has already started, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to start thinking about what changes want to see in your life. While many people will strive to start a new diet, to exercise more often, or to get into an exciting hobby, why not set goals that will help you achieve a brighter, more confident smile? There’s no better time than the present, so check out these four ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will have you loving your smile in no time!

#1: Visit the Dentist

In 2020, over one-third of adults in the U.S. hadn’t visited the dentist within the last 12 months. Avoid being part of this statistic and maintain a healthy smile by seeing your dentist every six months. This will allow your hygienist to thoroughly clean your teeth and your dentist to identify and treat oral health issues before they become any worse.

#2: Brush and Floss Better

Do you brush your teeth for two minutes twice per day? Nearly one-third of people don’t brush their teeth at all! Make sure to take good care of your smile by brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to strengthen them against cavities. Additionally, floss at least once per day, preferably before bed. This will remove 40% of plaque from your teeth and lessen your chances of developing cavities.

#3: Cut Out Tobacco

Did you know that cigarette smokers are 10 times as likely to develop oral cancer as non-smokers? They are also two times as likely to develop gum disease. By cutting this bad habit out, you’ll be able to maintain a healthy smile while also improving your overall health. Look online for resources if you need help quitting and asked friends and family for support.

#4: Whiten Your Smile

It’s unfortunate, but some of our favorite beverages like coffee, tea, cols, and red wine can discolor our smiles and leave behind unsightly stains. Cutting back on these drinks can help lessen discoloration. You can also drink them through a straw so they have less contact with your pearly whites. If you have existing stains that you want to get rid of, ask your dentist about options like dental bonding or teeth whitening to bring back your smile’s former glory.

With these New Year’s resolutions and a little bit of determination, your oral health goals are within reach. Whether you decide to set your sights on one of these foals or all of them, you’ll be sporting a gorgeous grin you can’t help but show off by this time next year!
